Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8k - Inverted Anamorphic

Shot in open gate mode of the Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K which has an 1.5 aspect ratio (36X24mm). On top of our spherical lenses we added an Aivascope 1.75X anamorphic adapter, but instead of mounting it normally we inverted the squeeze ratio by rotating the scope by 90 degrees, reaching a crazy portrait aspect ratio without cropping. To be more exact 1.5X aspect divided by 1.75X squeeze ratio = 0.86 aspect ratio.

Broad Daylight - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

Lenses involved in this quick test are the tiny Contax g 45mm | cooke speed panchro 75 s2 | Dulens mini prime 58mm. We had to work fast because this was in between rain showers.  Only one window of opportunity to get some nice sunny lit shots with the Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K.

Dulens 43mm - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

A quick test with the Dulens Mini Apoprime 43mm Cine Lens, which we just received in Amsterdam, we will be shooting a lot with these primes.

Aivascope 1.5X | Dehancer - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

We shot this small example with a Zeiss Contax g 90mm and the Aivascope Anamorphic Adapter on the Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8k. We graded this with Dehancer, get -10% off when purchasing with promocode GAFPAGEAR.

18mm Height Mode | S35 silent aperture - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

Shot with a ARRI/Zeiss Ultra Prime 40mm

280 FPS - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

This is the highest possible fps. The Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K currently can do 280fps, you have to crop to s16 to enable this fps, but unlike some other cameras it doesn’t do pixel skipping or line skipping.  Lens was a bit vintage (Nikkor 24mm), so can be quite a bit sharper and less aberrations. But we kind of like this look.

S35 Commercial samples - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

Here are a few commercial samples made for designer Rosa de Weerd who commissioned us to make content for her Instagram release of a new collection. We just randomly compiled some samples we made for her. All shot in 18mm sensor height of the MAVO Edge and shot on the ARRI/Zeiss Ultra Prime 40mm. Lit with Intellytech Pro Bi Color 2 lights and x-100 in conjunction with the Lightbridge crls reflectors.

S35 18mm - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

S35 footage at 1.33 crop of the full sensor height with even a few 2560 iso shots involved (the last 4). Lens was the Arri/Zeiss Ultraprime 40mm.

Dehancer kodak 250D - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

We have been experimenting with the Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K and are coming out with a kinelog3 to ARRI Log c conversion lut (non destructive), this example is graded with DEHANCER (get 10% off with coupon code GAFPAGEAR), grain and dust added in post, shot with a LOMO 11-35-1 in 18mm sensor height mode.

Vintage triplet prime 65mm - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

This Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K video is shot in Open gate scanning and sampling the full sensor (8K), and oversampling the data to the best possible pixel quality to 4k. Digital zooms are up to 180% and the lens is a 120 year old Cooke triplet design re-designed by Valdas . Footage shot at 640 iso /24fps in Prores444.

18mm/24mm sensor scan | Ultra Prime 40mm - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

The point of the video is that it’s shot in 2560 and we used the preset button to quickly toggle between 18mm sensor height and 24mm sensor height. We used a 40mm ARRI Ultra Prime, and when we wanted to make it wide I shoot Wider, we get more vignetting that helps the shot a bit (we like my wides dirty), both resolutions are close to 4k (in open gate around 4k oversampled) and in 18mm sensor height around 0.9 oversampled. Can you spot the differences?

27-07-2021 - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

A quick camera vlog by our own jvdp.tv. S35 crop Lomo OKC

Evening Walk - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

A short evening walk is always interesting, first shots with the girl and boy shot on 3200 iso, all shot in 36X24 sensor mode (open gate), and on the infamous Nikon Micro 55mm f2.8.

Faces at dusk - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

Zeiss Contax G | Cooke S4 | Dulens Miniprime | Lomo Superspeed | We tend to enjoy dusk, the environment can play a big role like the uv coated window behind us which gives a bit of a green bounce including a blue/greenish tinted olive tree etc., the balcony on top of me which flags a bit of skylight, which creeps in from a nice angle, etc. Its quite controlled light, which has such a huge dimension of qualities to it. We wanted to see how the MAVO Edge 8K would held up in such a condition, we did tweaks here and there in the grading ofc, but graded in respect to the matrix of the Edge. Hope this is another test that can guide everyone a bit in what to expect with the Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8k. This was all shot in 800 iso underexposed about 1.5 stop to middle gray (didn’t want to push the sensor), also I included a few s35 crops, to show you how similar the rendition is in crop sensor.

Dancing in the Dark - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test Footage

Jerome was doing his nightshift vlogging in the city with the Kinefinity MAVO Edge when he ran into Rob Polmann, a dancer. Shot in oversampled 4k from the 8k sensor in prores444 with a Leica m asph 50mm Summilux, even though they control spherical aberrations quite well, if you open them up fully you get lots of fringing, which some of you will hate and others will love.

Commercial Look in Harsh Sunlight - Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Test footage

We shot this in harsh sunlight with extreme vivid spring colors, green has lots of yellow spikes, and it was fun to see how the edge held up. We could have grade this darker, or deeper, but our attempt is to show you the full range of the camera and thus don’t crush any stuff.
We are aware that most of you know us of our somewhat vintage look, and of course we will come up with that later, but releasing a cine camera is a precious thing..
So first things first:

The lens was the amazing lomo OKC 14-75-1m mostly at T2.0- T2.8
This was shot in Open gate prores 444 8k. And downsampled in resolve to 4k . We will later release some 8k stills in log, so you can play on these as well!
